[ MSFS2020 | VATSIM ] "Bush League" event #57 takes flight in the Icon A5 near Kenora, Ontario!
Once a month, we try to join our friends for a recurring "Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series", exploring small grass, dirt, and gravel strips that are quite literally "off the beaten path". On a few occasions, this has branched out further into floatplanes / seaplanes -- and until now, I've avoided these (sometimes due to scheduling conflicts and other times due to a simple lack of interest and/or experience). This month's details weren't published until late, although we'd had hints in DownwindSim's Discord that a floatplane trip might be in the cards. I was originally thinking I'd simply tag along by visiting the closest nearby land-based strips available -- until the actual trip details revealed that there really weren't any! Rather than ditch my friends altogether, however, I decided to bite the bullet and do my best to fly along.
This entailed a quick study on an easy-to-fly amphibious aircraft. The good news here was that the Bush League adventures have tended to start an hour after our normal livestream start time. This afforded us a buffer to familiarize ourselves with something before joining the group. We loaded into Kenora, Ontario (CYQK) in the Icon A5, a modern floatplane I originally referred to as "experimental" but which later discussion clarified is a certified Light Sport Aircraft. We also had a "realism mod" (fine-tuning flight dynamics) and an enhanced avionics package, both found on flightsim.to. Multiple stream visitors pointed out the Icon's similarities to an exotic sports car, and we later learned that Lotus Engineering (among several other automotive designers) had a hand in its creation.
It wasn't immediately obvious how to power up the main navigation display, and later found that it seemed to be a glitch assigning a hardware switch to the Avionics Master rather than manipulating it by mouse. We also later encountered issues based either on the simulated aircraft's inability for, or simply my own unfamiliarity with, several key functions for maneuvering the craft in water. The first was to drop anchor or tie to a dock -- and the second was to send the propellor into an idle or an idle-reverse, such as you would be able to do in a small boat. My little bit of boating experience failed to help my docking ability because of those two shortcomings -- which, in fairness, were potentially my lack of knowledge and preparation, if indeed these functions are provided for in the sim. We did end up needing to slew, respawn, and "active pause" at various times to "make it work."
With all that being said -- we started at Kenora and got the initial kinks worked out, then flew a few quick circuits to get familiar with the plane's overall handling characteristics. Generally speaking, it's a powerful and nimble plane which glides extremely well. We then struck off for Peterson's Landing, a dock about five miles north and west of Kenora, which we only knew the location of because I had spawned in there to check it prior to the stream going live. Our first water touchdown went remarkably smoothly and we then "taxied" (or "boated," really) over to the dock. At that location, we found a few of our friends already docked, and also found in the custom scenery a map that included a few marked locations as well as two unidentified red Xs. We needed a hint to figure out what lake was represented in the map, but soon determined it was about 30nm north, and we were able to match it up with the SkyVector chart from that point.
We elected to explore the unidentified red Xs east-to-west, and relied on others in the group to tell us what to call them on CTAF. Easternmost was Kettle Falls, which we found from the air but almost lost our bearings on after touchdown. A "cheat" in the camera view got us back on track. We then took off again (though we considered traveling by water instead) to One Man Lodge, just a few miles south and west, on the near tip of an island which reminded us of an old handlebar mustache. Finally we continued south and west to find the one marked location of the evening, Caribou Falls. Here we discovered a descriptive sign which seemed to be pointing us toward the other two locations -- and realized that we'd done the adventure in the opposite order than was likely intended. Still, we had a great time exploring the area by camera, and found the gorgeous namesake falls well-represented in the sim.
All in all, it's doubtful that the Icon A5 would make its way into my regular rotation, as it doesn't really fit the mold of the aircraft I most enjoy flying. But if I were to discover how to maneuver and dock it in the water, I wouldn't be opposed to breaking it out on special occasions. The genesis of the series was always about forcing me to fly in ways I hadn't before, and I'd be missing out on exploring some amazing locations if I decided not to try a floatplane-based adventure again in the future. -- Watch live at www.twitch.tv/slantalphaadventures

Back in July of 2018, we launched our modest livestream by doing some pattern work in Birmingham, Alabama. We revisited the location twice more that month once to showcase some VOR tracking in the FSX Mooney, and once to re-enact a couple legs of Eastern Airlines 219 in the Digital Dakota Works C-47/DC-3. Routing is complicated.... more than I could cover in this tutorial. Mostly you want to ensure you're following standard airways for the majority of your route. Whether you include SIDs and STARs with your routing depends on (a) whether your origin and destination have them, and (b) whether it's customary in your region to include them in your filed route. In short, it's definitely something you want to research, but more than I can cover in one single tutorial.

      Best of luck! The learning curve at the beginning is indeed steep, and the UK in particular is a very busy airspace. So be patient, and don't get discouraged if you learn a few things the hard way. Aim to get slightly better at it each time you go out, and before you know it you'll start feeling more confident.

      No, I don't -- I updated it as it morphed from the JPL to the WBSim. However, I also don't have any problems with the current WBSim version. The only thing I don't like with the current version is the windows -- I prefer the one-click operation of the handle and window, as opposed to the whole window being a massive clickspot which can be progressively opened or closed. Otherwise I like the current version. Either way -- tl;dr, nope, I didn't keep any of the previous version installers. Sorry!

    Thank you, this was a great video. I've been searching all over to find out if I could use a code that is out of business, SGO. I downloaded the Iron Maiden livery and wanted to be called "Maiden 22". It was Cardiff Airlines out of Malta and uses the call sign "maiden", perfect!! Thought about using TWA too, because I live in St Louis. Been watching your videos, learned a ton, thanks. I've only done 2 flights so far, learning more each time I fly.

    • @SlantAlphaAdventures
      @SlantAlphaAdventures Місяць тому

      Yep, there's no problem using a defunct or even a fictional one! As for Iron Maiden -- last I heard, they were being transported in a 747 operated by Air Atlanta Icelandic, ICAO callsign ABD ("Atlanta"), and would fly "Ed Force One" under the callsign ABD666 ("Atlanta Six Sixty-Six"). There are even some videos from around 8 years ago on the VASAviation channel where you can hear them talking with ATC. Search "ABD666" on UA-cam and many of them will turn up. I'm not sure whether that is more recent or more historic than Cardiff's tenure.

      @@SlantAlphaAdventures The first plane was an A320 for the Somewhere Back in Time Tour, and it was registered to Astreaus Airlines, which later became UAE, and was for the EU part of the tour. It worked so well they changed to a 757 for the rest and later tours. You have the call signs correct, but I wanted to match my livery, just for kicks. Even using A6EDY for my tail. Don't think Cardiff was part of the tour, they just had the right call sign.

    • @SlantAlphaAdventures
      @SlantAlphaAdventures Місяць тому

      the number one reason this happens is the callsign you filed under doesn't EXACTLY match the callsign you connected under. the number two reason is that you mistyped your origin airport ID. as an example, the Tower controller at KMCI won't be able to see your flightplan if you accidentally entered it as KCMI. the third reason might be that you're VFR within the US. a recent change with the US radar client makes this more realistic. VFR flights in the US simply have to advise their intentions verbally. some newer VATSIM controllers may not fully understand VFR procedure and think they should be seeing your plan -- or they may misunderstand and think you're IFR. if it's not one of those three cases, consider using VAT-Spy and going to the "flights" tab to see if there's something pre-filed under your CID and figure out why it isn't matching.

      sorry, I'm just now seeing this. UA-cam doesn't notify me of a second and subsequent reply on the same thread, unfortunately. yeah, for transponder I'd go with C as a standard, vintage, Mode-C transponder. however, with ADS-B (digital location transmission) becoming more and more pervasive, and even starting to be required in the real world to fly in certain airspaces, I guess to be consistent with real-world requirements you might just go ahead and claim you have a Mode-S (code S or L, depending on exact capabilities). Since Mode-S isn't fully realized in most simulated aircraft nor on VATSIM yet, t's not super-critical that you truly know every nuance of it.

    Actually there's a much easier way to file a flight plan to VATSIM. You can create one in SimBrief and then after you generate your flight, you'll get the chance to file it directly from SimBrief (bottom if the page). This will open the exact same page as you showed with the addition that all the required fields are already filled. There is the option to download the flight plan for vPilot but this is deprecated (as of April 2024) as you showed. Thanks for the video though

    I am having problems steering. Can you help what I am missing. It is very hard to turn and adding full power on the right and idle left and barley moves. I have no other issues with any other aircraft. I clicked on the nws button and to no avail.

    • @SlantAlphaAdventures
      @SlantAlphaAdventures 3 місяці тому

      Referrence 32:20 in the video -- when pressing the button for nosewheel steering, make sure the green indicator on the glareshield illuminates, just as mine does. If yours doesn't, there may be a keybind interfering with the button. I'd check the FlySimWare Discord about that because I do remember there being some discussion wherein if you bind that button to a joystick input, pressing it with the mouse in the cockpit won't register. Either way -- if that green indicator is on up top, you should be good. If it isn't, that's where you need to spend your troubleshooting efforts. Best of luck.

    Hey Boss - FYI the prop de-icer is electric in the DC-6, so no need to turn it off when you ran out of juice. The alcohol is for the carbs, and to supplement windscreen heat but I don’t think that is simulated.

      @SlantAlphaAdventures 3 місяці тому

      This was specifically discussed from 0:01:42-0:03:00 in the video (and mentioned in the video description too). Until there is an actual full release with a manual and tutorials from FlySimWare, you're pretty much on your own to find performance charts. Google is your friend. Some decent resources have been posted in the FlySimWare Discord server, also.

    Nice video! As a controller only on Vatsim I like to say that EOBT is pretty important to be accurate. We have some tools that use it so the more accurate that time, the more accurate our tools ;)

    35:25 EET stands for Estimated Elapsed Time, so it’s the accumulated time from departure until a given point. In your example the KZNY FIR boundary will be reached 18 minutes after departure (not at 0018Z).

      ... which is plenty fine to get the point across on VATSIM. But, yes, "radiotelephony" (RTF/) to state it in officially formatted terms.
